What exactly is SEO?
When you search for something on Google, you will get a results page with lots of stuff and how many websites are there that are relevant to the search word or phrase you typed. You will get two types of search results organic results and paid results. Organic search results are the websites or webpages that closely match the users search criteria. Ranking high on organic search results is what SEO is about.
Search engine optimization (SEO) can be defined as a technique that helps your website rank high on search engine results. SEO is an important process that affects the visibility of your website in search engines unpaid results, which are often referred as organic results.
What you should know about search engine ranking is more than 90% of users click on websites that are on first page of search engine results. They don’t bother clicking on subsequent webpages. Instead, they change the search terms and start from the scratch.
You should also know that getting your website on first page of search engine results that your website is optimized for search engines and is capable of driving huge traffic. Now, people usually click on first 3 websites on first page of search engine results, which is also known as Golden-Triangle.
Nearly 63% of users choose websites that are in Golden Triangle category. This is the reason why your website should be optimized for search engines. The users who click on your website are the ideal visitors and are exactly looking for what you are providing or what is business is about. These visitors are more likely to convert into customer who convert your leads into sales.
If your website is not shown up in top 3 results or if it is not even on the first page of search engine results, then it is like your website does not exist and no one can even find it.
Has SEO changed over years?
SEO has been used as one of the best marketing tools for over 18 years. When SEO was introduced in the year 1995, it has not been planned cleverly as now. One of the reasons why SEO has changed is the changing algorithm of search engines. To deliver 100% accurate results and become more efficient, search engines are evolving constantly.
In early days, search results were displayed in alphabetic order. It was just a tool for clients and not for competing businesses. Today, search engines are filtering the websites based on relevant keywords. As the search engine results are filtered by relevant keywords, website owners started stuffing the content with keywords to gain more search results.
However, search engines are developed further than this, and originality is given utmost importance. Slowly search engine started evolving in such a way that they filter the websites based on multiple factors such as quality of content, keywords, external links, social networking, traffic to the website, etc.
Change in Google algorithm
Google designed two search engine filters Panda and Penguin, where each of these went through significant changes over years. Penguin was designed with the purpose of filtering sites that are Spam. Websites that are marked as spam will be added to search results after removing the spam content. On the contrary, Panda has been designed to filter websites with low quality content.
To stay updated with the changing algorithm, it has become important to change SEO rules and techniques. Today, search engines and SEO work together as a virtual team and the success of your website depends on these two entities.
SEO is an interesting field in the world of internet marketing and it is worth keeping an eye on the ever changing SEO trends. If so much has changed in 15 years, then the next 15 years will give a lot more. If you want to stay ahead of your competitors, you need to switch to online marketing today rather than tomorrow.
